When it comes to forest sounds, it is easy to miss a forest’s natural sounds.
However, a new study has revealed a new way of hearing forest sounds using the latest technology to analyse a forest soundscape in a controlled environment.
The study, published in Nature Communications, found that sounds that are unique to the forest can be found within a forest and can be detected using acoustic measurements.
The team led by Professor Richard Biddle from the University of Western Australia conducted the study using an array of devices that are used for sound measurement.
The devices have a variety of different microphones and can listen for sounds made by plants, insects, and animals.
“What we wanted to do is try and measure the different frequencies of the forest sounds that we’re hearing,” Professor Biddle said.
“So, for example, in the wild we have all these different types of trees and different species of insects and animals and things that make sounds.”
So, we wanted a way to record those different types and frequencies of forest sounds to find out which ones are unique.
“The study involved recording the sounds from an array on a computer screen, using a computer program called AISEN, which was developed by Dr Tom Larkin, from the Department of Geography at UWA.
The computer program was used to record the sounds that were being generated by a variety (more than 70) of different types, from plants to insects to animals.
The sounds were then played back to the user, and a computer could identify the unique sounds and tell them apart.
Professor Biddle explained that while the study looked at the forest soundscapes in Australia, the same sounds could be heard in other locations in the world.”
It is a very interesting study and I’m excited to be able to do it,” Professor Brian Pappas from the Faculty of Physical Sciences at the University, said.”
We’ve got a lot of forest trees in our world, but we’re not aware of any other places in the World where the forest might be very different to the one we know.
“Professor Biddler said the study is the first time that the data has been analysed in a natural setting.”
The idea that we could actually get a sense of what this is like in a forest is quite intriguing,” he said.”[This] is a first step towards a more complete understanding of the sounds of the world’s forest ecosystems.
“Hopefully this will help people to understand the differences between different species in different environments, and it will help us to get a better understanding of what is happening in those environments.”
The researchers say their findings could lead to the development of new ways of understanding the sounds in forest ecosystems and other natural sounds in the landscape.
“This is an interesting research project, and there is a lot we don’t know about the sounds we hear in forests, but it is exciting to think that we can start to understand them more,” Professor Pappatas said.
